I’ve been beating my head against my STILL (emphasis because this is another area that’s rubbing me raw…I’d LOVE to have a title for it but nothing feels right yet) untitled novel for over 2 months now and the block holds fast.
My main problem is I was writing merrily along without really giving a whole lot of thought about where I was going. I had a general flow and knew in broad terms what I wanted to happen and when but then something unexpected happened. I wrote what really feels like the end to me.
Wait what? I can’t be done! Half the story isn’t there yet. All those plot points that are needed to get my characters where they need to be are missing and it’s much too short by half. I’m sitting at a mere 31k words. And while that’s good for a novella this isn’t a novella. There’s still too much to fit in.
So I went back to the beginning and started adding chapters. I created an entire new beginning to the book (one I like much better and started things off clearer). Things were moving along smoothly until I hit the 5th chapter. The new 5th I should say…the old one had gotten pushed back to 8 or 9 by now.
I hit this chapter and I’m stuck. What’s happening is important but I feel like I’m stuck in this neverending twilight of conversation and I can’t get out of it. And what’s worse, I have no idea what happens next. None. Not a clue. I know I need to move from this chapter to the next but the interval between is a blank to me.
So, after a lengthy discussion with my husband last night, I’m shelving my “mysterical romance” for 2 weeks. I’m not thinking about it, not worrying about it, not dreaming about it. Nothing. My run of insanity is over.
After that two weeks I will sit down and work up an outline. I will fill in all that’s still needed and plot out where they will fit into my story. I thought about just doing that now but I really need a break from the story for a bit.
I will instead work on my werewolf story. It’s definitely a short story and I should be able to complete it in 2 weeks. Or nearly complete it.
Now I just need to sit down and plot out how it’s going to go….
